Book Introduction Blog Post

A.

Q1. Why is it important to study history and how may not studying it affect us?

A1.  History keeps us informed on current events as they unfold. Knowing history increases our ability to use our critical thinking skills. Without this knowledge, we would not be able to follow new news or effectively solve new problems.

Q2.  What do you think Marcus Garvey meant when he wrote, "A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots."?

A2. We need history to make our future. History gives us the strength we need to continue to fight and to hold us up when we feel weak. It's our backbone

This is my example of a photograph that does not represent photojournalism. I took this photo to compare two phone cases. I didn't plan on taking the photo. There is nothing to write about this photo. It's just simply a photo for me to look at. I didn't take it planning on sharing it. It has no value, no real purpose, and no meaning behind it.

According to Professor Nordell, "Photojournalists take pictures of verbs." This photo does not display a verb. This photo instead displays a noun. There is nothing happening in this photo. There is no action involved in this photo.

This is my example of a photo that would be considered photojournalism. I took this photo to show AIC's first football game of the season. I planned on taking this photo. I can write a report about the experience behind this photo. This photo has meaning, and value, and serves a purpose.

This would be a form of freelance photography. I took this picture as I went about my day; seeing something I wanted to photograph and could write a story on.

C.  My current relationship with photojournalism is in the negatives. Before starting this class, I never knew what photojournalism actually was. I'm not someone who watches the news. Therefore, I don't really know what's going on in the world. My form of news would be from my friends or family talking about them. I never did research on my own, and that's scary. News should be a more important factor in my life. The only type of news I watch myself is the weather. Now that I am studying photojournalism for school, I am beginning to realize the importance of it. I hope I get to learn more about photojournalists themselves. Like what went on in their minds when they took the photo they did. I am interested to learn about politics, as elections are coming up. But I am drawn towards health-related topics; especially about the recent outbreak of monkeypox.
