Women Photojournalists - Trials and Triumphs

Phot o By:   Bill Marr  A.  Sarah Leen’s “ career as a photographer started in 1979, when she became the first woman to win the College Photographer of the Year award from the National Press Photographer’s Association .” She became known while she interned at National Geographic. “ In 2020, Leen founded The Visual Thinking Collective, a platform dedicated to supporting independent women photo editors, curators, and teachers in their pursuit of visual storytelling excellence ” (Danish Siddiqui Foundation). Later, in 2013, she became a freelancer and did 14 stories for National Geographic, where she continues to work as the first female director of photography. Photojournalists and Elections

Collage created with "Instantane" by Nicole Audet 10/21/24 By making this collage, my goal was to showcase the connection between photojournalists and elections. I took images from the debate and the storming of the capital, as well as photos of both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. I also created two AI photos to showcase how biases may be foreseen in photographs and added a sign to show my own possible bias within this assignment.  The top left and bottom left photographs show the storming of the capital that occurred on January 6th, 2021. This was a widely covered event by many journalists and news reporters. This was a Republican-dominated event.  The middle left and bottom middle showcase the last debate held on September 10th, 2024. This had both Republican and democratic visitors.
